On Tuesday, June 22, 5:30pm, the Friends of the Brooksville Free Public Library will hold their Annual Meeting & Potluck Supper. This year's speaker will be Dr. Jean Davison with a talk titled: On the Trail of an Iraqi Woman: A Nun's Tale Revealed. Dr. Jean Davison, Brooksville resident and author of four books, found herself becoming a sleuth when a footnote in a dusty volume caught her eye. It mentioned that a nun from Iraq had been one of the first Catholics to enter Muslim Malawi in the early twentieth century. What was she doing in Malawi -- so far from home? At the time of footnote's discovery, Davison, an anthropologist, was living and working in southern Africa. She learned that the Iraqi woman had left Mosul in 1898, traveled by camel caravan across the Syrian Desert, and ended up becoming a pharmacologist and community service sister in the Femmes de la Sagesse Order in France. On taking her vows, she became Sister Marie Reine de la Jesus. According to the footnote, the Malawians had lovingly called her "Mai Moto, Mother of Fire."
